About Honduras (HN)

The Central American country of Honduras (HN) is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, and features coastline on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It’s a beautiful country renowned for ancient Mayan ruins, fine beaches, and coral reefs, but unfortunately marred by widespread gang violence, so it’s important to review official travel alerts before visiting for updates

Most visitors to Honduras make a beeline to the resorts found in Tegucigalpa, Copán, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and Roatán (on the Bahia Islands).

Its tropical climate is consistently warm year-round, with September through February the wettest months, and thus, least popular with travelers. Honduras is very popular with tourists on a tight budget, but many areas of the mountainous interior are no-go zones for foreigners (and city-dwelling locals alike). It’s an up and coming destination on the ecotourism circuit, thanks to the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve located in the lowland jungles.

  Getting around

By far the most safe, efficient, and cost-effective mode of transport for travelers is to rent a car in Honduras. However, like the country itself, the Honduran car hire experience can be both good and also fraught with hazardous conditions. The road network covers every destination — with the exception of the interior — but it’s impossible to make a blanket statement about the roads themselves.

The main highways are far and away the preferred routes for jetting from place to place, but there may be occasions when you need to use the unpaved rural roads, which is where the trouble starts. Law enforcement is virtually non-existent, and local driving habits create greater hazards than potholes. Honduras is the kind of place where you either stick to the main highways or you don’t go. And be mindful of the condition of your Honduras car hire before pulling off of the pick-up parking lot. Make sure everything works and all pre-existing damage has been documented.

  Choosing your car

Cheap car rentals in Honduras are supplied by the most trusted names in car hire: National, Sixt, Thrifty, Dollar, Avis, Budget, and Europcar. Choose from minicars, compact sedans, economy 3-door hatchbacks, fullsize 4-doors sedans, SUVs, specialty vehicles, estate wagons, and 7-12 seater minivans.

  Tips and advice

1

U.S. currency is widely accepted in Honduras, and in some cases, the preferred method of payment.

2

Check with your mobile wireless carrier about their international roaming charges. SIM cards are only available for Honduran citizens and permanent residents. Meanwhile, cellular coverage is pretty sketchy outside of the major cities and resorts.

3

Definitely check with your home country’s state department (or equivalent) for travel warnings before planning a trip to Honduras, and likewise, booking a car hire in Honduras.

4

The Honduran people are very happy to see you in their country, but it’s considered impolite to ask a question of a stranger without first introducing yourself.

5

For outdoor activities and wilderness excursions, be advised that remote areas are teeming with creatures and critters that can and would just as soon kill you as look the other way. Meanwhile, diseases like malaria and dengue fever are still prevalent throughout the country.

6

Don’t drive at night. Theoretically, you shouldn’t even go outside at night — unless staying in an upscale area or an all-inclusive resort.
