About Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA)

As the name implies, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA) is loose-knit marriage of two political entities, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzgovina, and the Republika Srpska, occupying a modest portion of the Balkan Peninsula. The country is further divided into six regions partially based on geography, but more importantly, populated by ethnic factions formed after the fall of the former socialist republic of Yugoslavia. The terrain of Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of mountainous interior, variable flatlands in the north and west, and rolling hills in the south, with a sliver of coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Its capital city of Sarajevo is the primary entry point for international travel and a fascinating beacon of European diversity. Generally speaking, the region is rapidly recovering from its war-torn past, with improvements to infrastructure geared towards stabilizing a country that has persisted in a constant state of flux. And in fact, Bosnia and Herzegovina has emerged as one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the world.

  Getting around

As the road network continues to improve, so will the process of getting around Bosnia and Herzegovina. Regardless of upgrades to public transport, visitors are strongly encouraged to rent a car. And despite adverse press and travel warnings, things are getting much better in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is a beautiful country with a wide range of destinations and attractions. New highway construction will continue to add kilometers to the nation’s system of routes, and some excellent roads can be found throughout the country. However, a significant number of minor roads have yet to be repaired, and so, best avoided — especially in a car hire. Meanwhile, mountainous terrain and reckless local motorists further complicate navigation. It’s not among the most challenging places in the world to drive, but inexperienced drivers are advised to stick to the main roads and heed warnings of caution.

  Choosing your car

Cheap car rentals in Bosnia and Herzegovina are available from Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Thrifty, and Sixt. Choose from standard and fullsize sedans, estate wagons, midsize and fullsize SUVs, and 7-12 seater minivans. However, for the best deals on Bosnia and Herzegovina car rentals — and the widest selection — look to compact hatchback 3-door coupes, economy 4-door sedans, and minicars.

  Tips and advice

1

You’re required to inform your Bosnia and Herzegovina car hire provider if you plan to take the vehicle across international borders.

2

Border crossings are generally not a problem, but it’s imperative that you have your car rental agreement in the vehicle at all times.

3

The compact city of Sarajevo is characterized by narrow streets that restrict mobility and a dearth of parking in the central district. Most visitors park on the outskirts and walk in.

4

Car rentals in Bosnia and Herzegovina — and Balkan states in general — require a much larger deposit than most countries.

5

The official currency is the Konvertibilna Marka (KM) and pegged to the Euro. Be sure to exchange your unspent KM before leaving the country, as many foreign currency traders don’t accept it.

6

The official languages in the Bosnia and Herzegovina are Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian; however, many Bosnians speak English, and smaller percentage also speak German.
